What are Ladder Duty Ratings and Ladder Load Capacities?

Ladder Duty ratings were created to establish consistent standards for the construction, design, testing, care, and use of portable ladders of various types and styles.

There are different styles of ladders, such as portable stepladders, step stools, extension ladders, trestle ladders, sectional ladders, combination ladders, single ladders, platform ladders, and articulating ladders.

Each duty rating is associated with a corresponding maximum weight capacity that the ladder can safely support. The maximum weight or load is determined by several factors:

  • Your weight, plus
  • Weight of PPEs you’re wearing, plus
  • Weight of tools and tackles stored on the ladder pocket

To meet safety standards, all ladders are required to have a Duty Rating sticker placed on the side. It’s important to note that the ladder’s weight capacity is not related to its length, so it is not safe to assume that a longer ladder has a higher weight capacity.
